Cruising: Basic Conduct Guidelines

Most people will view a vacation as an escape from the daily constraints they deal with at work. That may be true, but a cruise - or any kind of vacation, for that matter - should not be a departure from the basic rules of decent behaviour. While there is no written moral code to provide conduct guidelines for cruising, any person with a regular dose of common sense should be able to comply with the etiquette applying in this situation.

A ship is a miniature world. The cruisers come from different parts of the world, therefore there will be quite a lot of differences between them - from the cultural and religious background to eating habits, and, depending on their original time zone, sleeping hours. However, this should not sound like a socializing challenge. Most people live in some sort of community - it's common practice, except for ascetics, but then those belonging to this category will most likely not go on cruises. Therefore, when you step aboard, just keep in mind that you're still part of the same diverse world you know from home, and that tolerance and friendliness are needed to make this a pleasant experience for everyone.

The only thing that may be less familiar are the rules of the ship itself. Make sure you know the ship's activities so that you won't stand in anyone's way. And when the ship docks, ask for the time of departure before darting off to explore the port. Read the instructions provided on the ship, or at least ask the ship's personnel if there's anything you're not sure of.

Since no cruise is planned for one specific person, some things might not be quite the way you would prefer them. But if you keep complaining, you'll definitely not be the way the other cruisers would prefer you to be, and you'll probably get more disapproving looks than compassionate pats on the shoulder. Instead of whining, you might want to contemplate the sea and the sky, the sound of the waves - in other words, look at the sunny side of the deck. It is guaranteed to increase your chances of making friends.

There may be some clothing guidelines for dinner or any entertainment events on board. You might have to wear different clothes than the kind you're used to, but give it a try: a vacation is a good opportunity to try something new. Furthermore, not everyone has read the story of the Ugly Duckling, so it's safer to just blend in and dress like everyone else on such occasions.

Patience is good. Don't leave your coat on the chair because you intend to actually sit on it in half an hour and you're afraid someone else might take it in the meantime. There are plenty of fish in the sea, and plenty of chairs in the room - you should have no trouble finding either. And if you're standing in line, don't be a representative for five other people who will, at a later time, surprise all those behind you by cutting in. It's not OK. As for surfing the Net, while it might seem quite appropriate in this naval context, should not be done to excess: many other people might be waiting to send an e-mail or read a piece of news. The same applies to gym equipment and all facilities that other people may want to use as well.

If you don't see anyone smoking, you might be in a non-smoking area. Check before lighting a cigarette - it's quite annoying to realize there's no ash tray around, anyway.

These unwritten rules probably date as far back as Noah's Ark. Therefore, it should not be so difficult to keep them in mind and observe them. Remember, it's not just your vacation: the others have the right to a good time too. It's no sacrifice, just common sense.
