Deciding Where to Cruise

The word "cruise" will get most people dreaming about tropical destinations and light clothing. That is, most people who haven't yet researched all the options they have.

With the expansion of the cruise industry and the growing popularity of sailing vacations, you can now indeed afford to spend your holiday travelling to such exotic places, but they are not by far the only possibility. Less explored ports such as those of Hong Kong, Alaska, Norway, and the Amazon have been added to the list of potential destinations, much to the joy of those who like sailing but don't like to sit in the sun, or those who tend to avoid clichés.

Still, you shouldn't cast aside such destinations as the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Jamaica, and other sunny corners of paradise as unoriginal and mainstream. They are still some of the most popular choices, especially among first-time cruisers. Setting sail from some port along the Eastern US coast and sailing to the Caribbean can be an irresistibly beautiful vacation. Don't forget the Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico - places you are perfectly right to find in your photo album.

The Hawaiian islands and the famous beaches of Punaluu are frequent destinations for those who live on the Western US coast. Alaska is also gaining ground - and ground is the key word. When the ship docks, you can contemplate the glaciers by land or from a helicopter, or even explore them in a guided tour. You'll be able to see whales and bears with your own eyes - and through the lenses of your camera as well. Whether you like fishing or you want to imagine the old Gold Rush days in the Alaskan ports, this part of the world has all the makings of a memorable cruising destination.

In wintertime, many cruisers will want to go to warm, sunny places such as Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires. Some might even be tempted by an adventurous cruise along the Amazon or around the Galapagos Islands.

If you're interested in ports where globalization is less obvious, then consider a cruise on the Indian Ocean. You will love visiting the ports of Madagascar, the Seychelles or the Spice Islands. You might also use the cruise as an overture to a Kenyan safari.

A cruise on the Mediterranean is an opportunity to enrich your knowledge of history and culture. The attractions lie on shore, of course - places like the Greek islands or Italy. Corfu and Crete will most likely be part of your cruise if you choose Greece, and the ruins of Rome are a tourist's must once you've set foot on the Italian shore. Further towards the west, you can breathe in the Latin spirit of Barcelona, or visit the famous castles of Scotland.

Even though the amount of money you have at your disposal will greatly influence your choice of destination, deciding which cruise to go on will still not be easy. There will always be a variety of options open to you. But relax, it's only your first cruise.
